Photo365 – Day 353 – Tired old bear

I sometimes get inspiration from photos in galleries or stores. While in B&Q last week I saw a framed photo of a bear in a bed. So I thought I’d get my old old friend out and photograph him. This is the bear I had as a kid. It was already quite old when I got him – I think it’s from the 50s.

The photo I saw was a clean and bright “chocolate box” shot…not what I had in mind. I wanted a bed time sleepy image. So I used the bedside light as a backlight and a torch to fill in around the front. The exposure was about two seconds which gave me enough time to paint over the arm, face, pillow and sheet. I did several until I got the desired effect. The light in the eye was important.

Taken on the Olympus E-P2 with a Chinese Leica M adaptor attached and a Minolta Rokkor 28mm which was made for their CLE.

Photo365 – Day 339 – The Savoy

While at Donna Nook I spotted this interesting textured cabbage…the Savoy (Capitata var. sabauda L.). In the supermarket they’re normally less interesting, but a farmer sells fresh produce at the car park field of Donna Nook. You also find sprouts on the stem etc.

I thought it would make in interesting photo so bought one for just 50p

I placed it on a plastic table and backlit it with my home made ring light. The centre of the cabbage was dark so I lit that with the Joby Gorilla Torch. Exposure was 8 seconds at f/22 with ISO400 (I forgot to set that back to ISO100!) on the Olympus Pen E-P2 with 14-42mm lens.

Photo365 – Day 249 – pineapple

I have a new theme to introduce to my photo365 blog – fruit and veg. I will from time to time use my daily post for a different way of shooting fruit and veg. This one is lit just with my Gorillatorch

I placed the Pentax K-5 on a tripod set the shutter to 30 seconds at f/4 and tripped it. I then painted the pineapple with light placing emphasis on the sides to give a rim light type effect, trying not to spill onto the background (black velvet)

I quite like the lush feel it’s given this tropical fruit.

Photo365 – Day 58 – ornament and fire

This is a figurine placed in front of an electric fire and then the metering exposed for the fire. The result was a silhouette of the figurine, so I used a torch to illuminate that. The first few attempts were either too bright or had reflections on the background.

This one was done with the torch firstly positioned on the left so the shadow projected on the back and then a small amount to the right to evenly balance the exposure on the face. A slow shutter speed gave me time to move the torch around during the exposure and has created the blurry flames.
