William Cheung’s Best Man

Wadenhoe House, nr Oundle

wedding invite

Will Cheung tied the knot with Joanna Raines today and he’d invited me to be his best man.

We’ve been good friends since he employed me as his technical writer on Practical Photography back in 1991. Over the years we’ve travelled around the world together, eaten in some of the finest restaurants and when our hosts were taking the rest of the European Journalists on the usual tourist excursions we’d wander off together photographing the back streets of the cities.

When he asked me I froze. It’s not that I didn’t feel honoured…more terrified of having to stand up and do the best man speech. Public speaking is a big phobia of mine and I usually avoid it at all costs!

After months of worry the big day arrived and we spent a wonderful day at Wadenhoe House nr Oundle Peterborough.

They were married at 1:30pm.

Good to meet up with old friends and colleagues in the afternoon and evening including my previous bosses Karen Lynch and Richard Hopkins,  work colleagues Roger Payne, Chris Robinson, Ian Fryer and Mike Elliott, and industry friends Graham Armitage and Angela Warnes.

I took a few snap shots using the OM-D in between my minimal duties.

PMA 1997 – New Orleans

PMA  1997 was in New Orleans, United States. We went over four four days flying Continental London to Houston Flight CO 5 Seat 38F and Housten to New Orleans on Flight CO 1631 Seat 25A . We stopped in the Marriott

Agfa invited us on a Dinner Jazz Cruise  on the PaddleWheeler Creole Queen and we took ourselves off on Captain Terry’s Swamp Tour on Esperanza Plantation.

I was so ill on that trip from a weird flu like sinus infection were my eyes where weeping and I had the most intense headache.

Memorable moments were the what seamed like plastic alligators on the swamp tour, Roger coming back from a night out totally enthused by a man who could play a tray with his fingers, and Warren playing the flaming Sambuka game and not realising you don’t span your hand out when placing it over the glass.

First Photography Magazine

Practical Photography November 1976

I bought my first photography magazine.

I’m not sure of the exact date so I have picked the week before publication month.

The issue included adverts for Agfa CT18 film, Yashica FR cameras, the Olympus OM-2, National flash, Canon FTb, Fujica St605 and much more. It seemed more ad lead than editorial and reflects what appeared to be a very healthy photo industry…a complete change to how things are today!

The editor was Robert Scott who now runs Canon EOS club and the ad manager was my good friend Mike Elliott who currently works for Bright Publishing
