I keep forgetting to update this blog! Today I drove for 4 hours, using the sat nav for directions, from Sheffield to Wasdale Head. The route was fine and expected at the beginning via motorways to Lancaster, then as I hit the lakes I started to notice it taking me the “shortcut” and not around the coastline on the A595 as I would have done via map nav. I ended up on Hardknott Pass.  This seriously dodgy road has some parts with 45 degree inclines, and in most places is only wide enough for one car. Quite an experience, especially when the air ambulance came and blocked the road so a fallen cyclist could be scooped up and whisked off by helicopter to hospital.

I arrived at Wasdale Head and parked in the village green, and then set of up through Seathwaite Farm and by the base of  Great Gable.

A quick stop for a self portrait (camera on self timer resting on a rock) showing Scafell in the distance.

Alport Castles

Dave Horton and I went for a circular walk that took us up Win Hill, over to Hope Cross, down to Alport Farm, and then up to Alport Castles. The final leg was a descent to Westend and round the reservoirs, Derwent and Ladybower. Back over the bridge to the Yorkshire Bridge inn for a pint of Bradfield brewed Farmers Stout. and finally back down the hill to rejoin the car. The round walk was approx 17miles and was completed without too much effort.

This is my Life

Yesterday I finally decided what to do with all the photographs and memorabilia I’ve been storing for years…create a WordPress blog and place it all in chronological order. So from today I begin a project of converting photos, tickets, passes, diary events, and things I can recall into a “This is my Life” blog – my way of documenting what I’ve done, that I can recall from visual aids. Let the fun begin!

Photo365 – Day 237 – levitation rehearsals

I decided to start to improve on my levitation skills. So this evening I cycled off into Clumber to do some woodland levitation.

I’ve admired the work of the highly creative ePHOTOzine member Beckas and the world famous Miss Aniela, but a few weeks ago I stumbled on the work of a Japanese photographer yowayowacamera Her work is more raw and natural everyday looking. So I’m going to attempt to recreate that look.

In my practice run I realised it can be done in daylight without flash but a fast shutter speed is necessary and tonight the light wasn’t bright enough without going in to the higher noisy ISO settings of the Olympus EP2. So I had a choice of noisy or blurred. I took several pics with each option and preferred noisy.

Then you have issues with timing. I was alone so the camera was mounted on a mini tripod and the self timer set. I jumped after a count of four when the red light started to flash. Being in the right place at the right moment using this method is hard work.

And then thirdly the big skill is adopting a natural looking mid flight pose. I had shots with buttocks clenched, tongue out, hands stretched unnaturally, fists clenched, neck tensed and just about any other unnatural looking features. Look at the work of that Japanese girl she’s incredible. It’s as though someone has just picked her up bent a few joints and stuck her on the spot. That as you see if you have a go is quite a talent in itself.

To get the height I positioned a sawn log just out of view and jumped up off that to give me a bit of a higher starting point.

This is my best attempt…noisy, chopped off limb, and slightly unnatural pose but it’s not too bad!

Photo365 – Day 231 – wide and hdr

Thought I’d play around with the wide angle lens and HDR. So here’s a close up self portrait from above using the Pentax 12-24mm at 12mm and a five exposure bracket blended in Photomatix 4.

Photo365 – Day 227 – Selbstportrait

Title borrowed from an album by one of my early musical influencers – German artists Hans-Joachim Roedelius.

The shot was taken this morning as I played around with the SLR Magic Toy lens in preparation for a review I’m writing.

It’s a 26mm f/1.4 lens that fits the Olympus E-P2

Photo365 – Day 224 – levitation

I saw some great levitation photos this morning which triggered me to have a quick initial go to see how I thought they were done. I’m not happy with the result and will have to look at some techniques on the subject as it’s a totally new avenue for me.

I’ve shared the shot anyway as a record of where I started out.

Photo365 – Day 198 – Fairy filter

This is a self portrait taken through a full bottle of lemon fairy liquid. I quite like the soft effect that make me younger and the unusual distortion.
And that’s photo365 picture number 198

Photo365 – Day 193 – the gardener

Well hardly but I enjoyed getting the shot. The camera Olympus EP2 with fish eye adaptor was placed on the soil pointing up with the timer set for 12 seconds. The exposure was set to plus 3 stops to ensure I came out exposed correctly with the backlight.  And then with the shutter pressed I stepped into place. It took a few shots to get the can in the right place and right angle.
